If guilty individuals (corporate and, hopefully, congressional) are not both found and punished severely in the Enron debacle, there should be a tremendous shake-up in the Congress come the next election. In addition, if culprits (corporate individuals and congressmen) are not found, I anticipate a major collapse of the ''stock market". Why? Confidence in the laws that govern our financial system will take a big hit. The sham quality of "accountability" will have been exposed for God and everybody to see, together with the sincerity of our congressmen/women. There would be no reason for an investor to conclude that a highly respected company is other than merely a shell, so the "market" would not be a viable place to invest one's money.
This government must change course from "for hire" to "for everyone" before disaster strikes.
If people from 18 through 45 or 50 perceive that the Government is crooked, and a competent leader of that mass emerges, we could have riots that will put Watts to shame.
Sir, please consider what I've said in formulating your recommendations to the country's leadership.

Wie gesagt, erst muß die 200Tagelinie durchbrochen werden, dass ich an eine Wende glauben kann. Vorher geht gar nichts. Die Kurse steigen doch jetzt nur, weil die Fonds ihr Geld vor Jahresende noch anlegen müssen. Und dann....ja, dann werden sich die Fonds wieder verabschieden.
Naja....vielleicht könntet ihr ja auch die 10jährigen Anleihen aus dem Markt nehmen. Oder die Anleihen ganz abschaffen. Dies war doch mal im Gspräch oder nicht!?
Wie dem auch sei, es wird für euch schwer werden, das Anlegervertrauen wieder zurückzugewinnen. Zuviel ist kaputt gegangen. Du hast einfach die Zinsen im Jahr 2000 zu stark erhöht und wer weiß, ob dies nicht wieder geschieht. Du hast doch nicht an die Aktionäre dabei gedacht und an die Wirtschaft und jetzt ist alles am Arsch.....

Dies würde vielleicht das Vertrauen in Aktien zurückbringen, aber so ??
Ich meine, solange die, die Geld haben nicht in Aktien investieren, warum sollen es dann die kleinen machen?
Hinzu kommt noch, dass die Vorstände der Firmen auch kräftig ihre Aktien verkaufen. Warum wohl??? Ist doch ein schlechtes Zeichen, wenn der Vorstand sich von seinen Aktien trennt. Dies sind alles Dinge, auf die man jetzt achtet. Bill Gates macht auch ständig Kasse, verkauft eigene Aktien. Schlechtes Vorbild, wenn sie selbst nicht mehr daran glauben, dass die eigenen Aktien steigen werden....
Wie gesagt, erst wenn die Reichen wieder richtig einsteigen, ist der Zeitpunkt der Wende gekommen, dass auch der kleine Mann wieder in Aktien investiert.
Denk mal darüber nach. Vielleicht sollten sie es aus patriotismus tun, um ein Zeichen zu setzen!!!!

nehmen wir mal an, die Langfristzinsen für Kredite würden sich halbieren, dann könnten doch die Verbraucher ihrer Hypotheken und sonstigen Kredite umschichten, sie würden ne Menge Geld an Zinsen sparen und dieses wiederrum in den Konsum stecken. Würde das nicht helfen, das Vertrauen der Verbraucher wieder herzustellen und den Kosum anzukurbeln? Vielleicht sind eben diese Zinsen immer noch zu hoch!? Ihr müßt euch eben halt was einfallen lassen!!!!!!!!!

na, die Zinssenkung hättest Du letztes Jahr machen sollen. Jetzt...ist es zu spät. Die Börsen haben sich zwar erholt, aber, der große Absturz wird wieder kommen. Es ist nur eine Frage der Zeit. Die Fonds, naja, die kaufen jetzt Aktien um ihre Performence aufzubessern. Außerdem müssen sie ja in Aktien investiert sein, ob sie wollen oder nicht. Aber warte mal, wenn diese Fonds ihre Bücher schließen, dann, ja dann gehts wieder rund. Die Kurse werden geradezu wieder purzeln. Denn an den Aussichten für die Unternehmen hat sich doch nichts geändert, niedrige Zinsen hin oder her. Wenn keiner Aufträge erhält, dann wird auch nicht investiert. Mein Gott, was hast Du nur angestellt im letzten Jahr. Du hast alles in den Sand gesetzt.

I would like to have a question answered. Why don't the Feds (or whoever has the whip) force the banks to lower mortgage rates to match the interest rate cuts? This would be the quickest way to get money back into the economy. If I could refinance to a 5% mortgage, I would be pumping much more money into the economy for at least the next 20 years. na, wie lange soll die party noch so weitergehen an den börsen? bis an die 100 tagelinie. der schachzug mit den 30jährigen ist ja clever, wird aber nichts nützen. die wirtschaft ist am boden und die zinssenkung morgen, naja, die wird auch nichts bringen. aber ihr habt es euch selbst versaut. ist schon komisch, mit dem regierungswechsel kam der salamicrash und viele leute hast du oder ihr, in den ruin gestürzt. finanziell gesehen. dafür werden sie dir ewig dankbar sein. hättest du die zinsen früher gesenkt, wäre dies alles nicht passiert. war aber vielleicht auch taktik von euch. euch traue ich alles zu!!!!

Everytime the Interest Rate is cut, a very large segment of America -- the Senior Citizens -- are hurt, as most have conservative interest-providing investments. Small monthly incomes have been slashed, causing seniors to have to tighten their belts drastically by reducing spending, thereby reducing the economy's growth -- the very thing you're trying to prevent!

hey...habt ihr eine scheiße gebaut. Mann, die Wirtschaft ist total am Boden vor lauter Schulden, die die Firmen zahlen müssen. Und dieses Geld ist es, dass für investitionen fehlt.
Und dann kommen noch die hohen Langfristzinsen hinzu, die nicht in diesem Maße gefallen sind, wie die Kurzfristigen. Ja, und dann noch der Krieg, den ihr führt. Ich glaube, Bush ist dieser Krieg wichtiger alles alles andere, auch die Wirtschaft ist ihm nicht so wichtig.
Wäre dies alles unter Clinton auch passiert?????
Und....mit Bomben löst ihr das Problem des Terrors auch nicht.
Ihr habt jahrelang die Taliban s unterstützt, das habt ihr jetzt davon....

der "Krieg", den ihr führt, soll doch die Menscheit nur von euren eigentlichen Problemen, Wirtschafts- und Finanzproblemen, ablenken, damit diese in den Hintergrund treten.
Die Weltwirtschaft ist am Ende. Das Waschstum hat seinen Höhepunkt erreicht und für die nächsten Jahre wird es Rezession geben, weil, Firmen können angesichts ihrer hohen Verschuldung nicht mehr investieren. Sie ersticken in Zinszahlungen. Und die Verbraucher sind ebenfalls hoch verschuldet, werden arbeitslos, wie sollen die noch was kaufen können. Und dies vollzieht sich weltweit, sodass ein Krieg ein gerade recht kommt um von diesen Problemen abzulenken..
Viele Drittländer haben doch Schwierigkeiten ihre Zinszahlungen zu leisten, sodass der IWF einspringen muß.
Es ist eine Abwärtslawine in Gang gesetzt worden, die sich nicht mehr aufhalten läßt. Wachstum, diese wirds in den nächsten Jahren nicht mehr geben, und dies wisst ihr.
Wir gehen sehr schlechten Zeiten entgegen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Deine Zinssenkungen und das die Nasdaq die letzten Tage gestiegen ist, ändert nichts daran, dass eure Bevölkerung sehr viel Geld verloren haben wegen euch, weil ihr sie getäuscht habt. Geld, das jetzt für den Konsum fehlt. Teilweise wurden Aktienkredite aufgenommen, den sie zurückzahlen müssen, ohne dass die Aktien den Wert besitzen. Also, eigentlich zahlen sie Schulden für nichts. Dieses Geld fehlt natürlich in der Kasse der Verbraucher. Diese können sie schon nicht mehr ausgeben. Ja...ihr habt eure Leute ruiniert. Und jetzt, wir Ausländer werden euch bestimmt kein Geld mehr anvertrauen, so wie ihr es gemacht habt. Das Mißtrauen ist da, und wird bleiben!!!! Zugleich sind da die Shortys, bei denen man nie weiß, was sie machen. Vielleicht drücken sie die Kurse ja wieder extrem nach unten. Wer weiß ?
Warum ist das überhaupt zulässig???

die Börse kann gar nicht mehr auf die Beine kommen, und weißt du auch warum? Weil ´die Leute erst mal ihre Schulden abbauen müssen, die sie für Aktienkäufe gemacht haben, wobei diese Aktien ja keinen Wert mehr darstellen. Also bezahlen sie Schulden für nichts. Soe sieht es auch. Da helfen auch keine Zinssenkungen. Wenn ich kein Geld übrig habe´, kann ich auch keinen Kredit aufnehmen. Und die Firmen, ja die sind doch auch hoch verschuldet, sodass sei keine Gewinne mehr vorweisen können, bedingt durch die Zinszahlungen, die sie leisten müssen.
Also, was soll das ganze???
Es ist vorbei mit dem Wachstum, uns steht eine Rezession ins Haus.
Keiner wird mehr in Aktien investieren oder etwas kaufen. Jeder wird versuchen zu sparen oder Schulden abzubauen.
Und warum das alles, weil Du die Zinsen ja hast erhöhen müssen. Da hat alles angefangen....
Ich warte nur darauf, dass Japan sein Vermögen bei euch abzieht. Und was macht ihr dann????
Ihr seit auf das Geld vom Ausland angewiesen, nur wird es nicht mehr so fließen wie all die Jahre zuvor.

Aber sicher, wäre natürlich schlecht für eure Banken. Die würden dann nichts mehr verdienen. Und deshalb, solange dies alles möglich ist, hält sich der Privatanleger wohl zurück mit dem Aktienkauf.

Deine intervention heute in den Aktienmarkt, einfach klasse, super!!!!! Nur....die wird leider nichts nützen, denn die Verschuldung der Firmen und des Staates und natürlich der privaten Haushalte, die bleiben ja. Zusätzlich rückläufige Aufträge seitens der Firmen.
Warum sollten da Privatanleger einsteigen, nur damit morgen oder übermorgen die Fonds und Banken wieder verkaufen und ich als Anleger wieder Geld verloren habe!?
Nee...nee...ich steige so schnell bei euch nicht mehr ein. Dies ist mir zu riskant. Und so wie ich werden wohl die meisten denken. Und außerdem, wieviele Anleger, die in Fonds investiert sind, haben auch eine Menge Geld verloren. Da steigt doch kein Privatmann mehr ein in Aktien oder Fonds.
Ich glaube, der Aktienmarkt ist auf Jahre hinaus geschädigt.

glaubt ihr wirklich, dass die Börse noch zu retten ist??? Die Fonds steigen doch nicht ein.. ja und wieviel Geld liegt in den Geldmarktfonds, oder in Anleihen, oder Wandelanleihen. Das fließt doch nie und nimmer mehr in Aktien.
Ihr habt die Aktienblase verursacht und die ist geplatzt. Die Verbraucher haben kein Vertrauen mehr in Aktien und dann noch dieser schreckliche Krieg, der kommen wird.
Ich glaube, es ist alles vorbei. Und wenn ich jetzt an die vielen Rentner denke, die vom Dow abhängig sind. Ihr habt sie doch ruiniert finanziell.

Es gibt kein halten mehr für den Dow, S&P und Nasdaq. Kein ausländischer Investor eure Aktien noch an, zumal auf die Gefahr besteht, dass der Dollar noch absackt. Ja, das mit dem Gold, das ist auch bekannt und das mit Russland und die Goldwährung. Bricht vielleicht deshalb alles zusammen wie ein Kartenhaus? Das wäre natürlich auch ein Grund. Nun ja, weltweit wird für die nächsten Jahre wohl das Licht ausgehen dank eurer Hilfe. Aber Dich braucht das ja nicht zu stören. Und noch was, die Geschichtsbücher werden auch neu geschrieben werden müssen. Und deinen "Heiligenschein",der ist auch futsch, wenn die Mehrheit der Bevölkerung aufgeklärt ist, über eure Manipulation, die ihr jahrelang betrieben habt, um die Leute in Aktien zu treiben. Sie wähnten sich sicher, sie haben Dir blind vertraut und jetzt stehen sie vor einem Scherbenhaufen, der nie wieder gut zu machen ist. Ihre ganzen Alterspensionen sind weg.

Hi Alan.... das, was ihr aus Geldgier getrieben habt in den 90-Jahren, das grenzt schon an geistigem Wahnsinn. Wie krank muß man sein, so etwas zu handhaben, den Aktienmarkt künstlich nach zu treiben. Den Goldpreis künstlich zu drücken. Ich warte nur darauf, dass Spekulanten, wie Georg Sorros, den Finanzmarkt zum Zusammenbrechen bringt. Und irgendwann wird es soweit sein. Die ganzen Devisengeschäfte, die jeden Tag getätigt werden, wie lange kann das noch gutgehen.
Wir stehen wahrscheinlich kurz vor einem Kollaps, den Du aber dann nicht mehr abwenden kannst. Und ich hoffe, ihr geht mit eurem Vermögen mit unter. Von dem abgesehen, wie kann man nur so geldgierig sein, mitnehmen kann man sowieso nichts.
Die Wahrheit über Dich, euer Land und was ihr getan habt, ist erschreckend. Ihr habt die ganze Bevölkerung für dumm verkauft.
Die Nasdaq wird fallen bis auf 1200 oder sogar 1000 Punkte und der Dow wird auch noch ganz schön bluten. Nur, die kleinen Leute, die darauf vertraut haben, dass sie ihre Altersrente gesichert haben, die sind die Verlierer bei eurem Spiel. Und Du bist mitverantwortlich dafür.

"Talsohle erreicht", hey....so was können wir doch nicht glauben, mit der hohen Verschuldung der Firmen und Privathaushalte. Es ist nur eine Frage der Zeit, wann bei euch alles zusammenbricht. Euer ganzes Finanzsystem. Du druckst massenhaft Geld und eure Wirtschaft schrumpft gleichzeitig. Wie soll das gehen. Bei euch wird es kommen wie in Japan. na.....was wird heute passieren??? Geht die Börse rauf oder runter??? Ich habe das Gefühl, das alles sei eine ausgemachte Sache und jeder von euch verdient daran auf irgendeine Art und Weise. Nachdem was im nachhinein alles so an die Öffentlichkeit gekommen ist, was für ein Schwindel, was an Betrug passiert ist, liegt doch diese Vermutung nahe, dass auch das wieder Betrug am Anleger ist. Warum laufen die Smal- und Mid-Caps, wenn es der Wirtschaft so schlecht geht? Das verstehe ich nicht. Ihr habt das Geld aus den Techwerten raus und steckt es in kleine Unternehmen oder Zinsanleihen. Und eure Investmentbanken zocken mit deinem Wissen und deinem Einverständnis die Anleger ab. Ihr steckt doch alle unter einer Decke und ich würde mich nicht wundern, wenn das alles eine ausgemachte Sache gewesen wäre. Denn nur die finanziell Mächtigen können so eine Baise verursachen und die seid ihr. Naja, ich hoffe, ihr bekommt die Quittung dafür, für das, was ihr da verursacht habt an der Nasdaq

na...das gestern, das war doch wieder mal so eine "Bärenfalle" für die Anleger, bevor es dann anständig mit dem Chart nach unten geht. Bist Du nicht dieser Meinung???? Ich, jedenfalls schon. Nur so eine "Verdummung" der Anleger, dass sie einsteigen sollen, dass sie denken sollen, die Wende sei da. Aber ich glaube nicht daran. Auch viele andere denken so wie ich. Hedgefonds, Shortys, die werden weiter ihr Spiel treiben, so wie bisher auch und die Kurse nach unten prügeln. Warum macht ihr nichts gegen solche Machenschaften. Warum ist diese Art von Geschäften erlaubt, wo sie doch weltweit die Finanzwelt durcheinander bringt. Siehe Hedgefonds 1998, der damals beinahe eine Krise ausgelöst hätte. Aber naja, ihr müßt es ja wissen, ob ihr diese riskanten "Spielchen" der Finanzwelt gutheißt oder nicht. Fest steht aber, dass sie eine weltweite Finanzkrise auslösen können, und diese wäre auch zum Schaden eures Landes.

die Aussage gestern von Cisco s Manager, daran glaube ich nicht. Wir Anleger wurden schon zu oft getäuscht. Und außerdem, das Spiel der hedgefonds und Shortys, dass die spielen mit der Telekommunikatinsbranche, sie werden es weiterspielen. Die Kurse total auf den Grund fahren. Und, wie lange willst Du diesem Treiben noch zusehen, dass diese Branche so zerstört wird. Ist dies für dich ok!? Das die Hedgefonds so eine Macht über Firmen ausüben können und ihr sie gerade so machen laßt wie sie wollen, ist mir unverständlich. Denn immerhin, sie können eine Krise auslösen, die weltweit sich auswirkt auch zum Schaden euer selbst. Aber ancheinend ist dies euch alle egal, welche Macht sie haben.

ich kann nur hoffen, dass alle Hedgefonds und Shortys bald anständig auf die Nase fallen. Komischweise bringst Du diese "Blase" die sich da aufgebaut hat, nicht zum Platzen. Eigentlich eigenartig, findest Du nicht??? Ist dieses Spiel, das mit Aktien getrieben wird, so wie es zur Zeit geschieht, so in Ordnung!? Ja, ich weiß, die Smal-und Midcaps laufen ja. Aber ist Dir die Technologiebranche so egal??? Die Erfindungen der Zukunft, die diese Branche hervorbringt. Man könnte es fast glauben. Weltweit ist diese Branche zum Untergang verdammt, könnte man meinen. Und die Shortys und Hedgefonds dreschen als auf sie ein. Der ganze Kapitalmarkt ist doch aus den Fugen. Es gibt doch keine Gesetze mehr, an die sich irgendwelche Finanzleute halten würden. Ja, und das alles mit Deinem und dem Segen der Regierung. Es ist schon traurig, was da an Vermögen in dieser Branche vernichtet wurde. Welches denen jetzt für Entwicklungen fehlt. Und ancheinen hat niemand Interesse daran, das sich das so schnell wie möglich wieder ändert. Ich habe gelesen, eure Steuereinahmen würden sich verringern. Geschieht euch ganz recht. Und eigentlich hoffe ich, dass bald eure ganze Finanzblase platzt, so wie Du es bei der Nasdaq auch gewollt hast, sonst wäre das alles nicht passiert. Ich hoffe, Du gehts bald in "Rente" auch wenn das an der Misere auch nichts mehr ändert. Auf jeden Fall, Du hast sehr viele Menschen ins Unglück gestürtzt. Vielleicht ist Dir das gar nicht so bewußt. Und eure Rentner hängen nun mal am Aktiensystem, welches wahrscheinlich bald total zusammenbricht, denn ewig könnt ihr die Welt nicht belügen. Es ist nur eine Frage der Zeit. Ach ja, Deine Zinssenkungen, ich gehe mal davon aus, dass dieses billige Geld in Zinspapiere investiert wird von den Banken, damit machen die Banken ja auch ihren Profit. Sei leihen es sich billig von Dir, gehen in Staatsanleihen, und bekommen dann wiederrum mehr Zinsen von Dir, als Sie selbst sie Dir zahlen müssen. Ein ausgeklügeltes System, muß ich schon sagen. Clever, clever....und die Banken machen ihren Reibach plus den geshorteten Aktien. Mein Gott, in meinen Augen ist dies alles doch Betrug. Betrug an der ahnungslosen Bevölkerung. Aber so langsam kommt man drauf mit welches Tricks ihr doch arbeitet. Es ist wie ein Puzzle, das sich zusammensetzt. Ich sags ja, es ist nur noch eine Frage der Zeit, wann dies alles auffliegt. Und, Amerika hat seinen Glanz verloren. "Das Land der unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten" über diesen Spruch kann ich nur noch lachen. In der Finanzbranche gibt es meines Erachtens nur noch Betrüger, die darauf aus sind, dem Ahnungslosen das Geld aus der Tasche zu ziehen. Und das ist den Banken sehr gut gelungen, finde ich.....

Ja, da wirds wohl noch ne Weile dauern, bis das Vertrauen wieder da ist. Solange der Abwärtstrend nicht gebrochen ist, kann man als Langfristanleger nicht investieren. Du kennst doch die "Bären"? Die nehmen es einem dann wieder weg. Und solange die noch den Markt beherrschen wäre es unsinnig einzusteigen. Und Deine Zinssenkungen, ja, wenn die Unternehmensgewinne nicht stimmen, dann helfen auch keine Zinssenkungen. Jedenfalls vorerst nícht. Schade, meine Vertrauen in die USA und in Dich ist leider zerstört. Du hast im nachhinein so viele Existensen zerstört, ich glaube, Du bist Dir darüber gar nicht bewußt, was Du angerichtet hast. Die vielen Arbeitslose jetzt. Die vielen kleinen Geldanleger, die ihr Vermögen verloren haben. Hast Du Dir darüber schon mal Gedanken gemacht?

Hallo Mr. Greenspan, also so langsam wird mir es zu blöd an der Börse. Kurse rauf, Kurse runter. Die großen Fondsmanager meinen wohl, wir kleinen wüßten nicht was für ein Spiel sie spielen und sie uns nur verarschen wollen. Jeder weiß, dass an der Börse die Zukunft gehandelt wird und dementsprechend sollte man auch kaufen und nicht nur auf das Aktuelle schauen. Die Nasdaq ist auf Jahressicht immer noch über 40 % im minus und ich frage mich, wie oft und wie weit wollen sie sie noch weiter runterfahren. Wird es nicht langsam Zeit, dass es wieder dreht? Sind die Kurse noch nicht genug eingebrochen? Will man die Kleinanleger total abschrecken zu investieren? Was wird aus ihrer Altersvorsorge, wenn es so weitergeht? Ich hätte tausend Fragen, aber keiner wird sie mir beantworten. Es sieht so aus, als ob über der Nasdaq böse Geister schweben würden. Ach, könnten Sie mir nur helfen, ich bin sehr verzweifelt, weil ich nicht weiß, wie es weitergehen wird.

I believe the best place to help those who need it most are those that are married, and dont have children yet. Trying to save to buy a house and plan a family is just that much harder, when you have to pay more in taxes. There are so much in taxes my wife and I have to pay its rediculous. I am usually in favor of your decisions. The decision to raise intrest rates prior to the Gates decision cost investors billions. The decision to not look at all aspects of our excellant commerce before raising intrest rates is going to hurt tourism, construction, automobile sales, and cause the general disruption of all logical growth. You have prematurally decided that our economy is growing too fast without taking in all the factors. The one main fact is how you fail to predict the future that you control. Right now you need to drop the intrest rates or we are going to just appeal to the rich once again and destroy everything that President clinton has built.

Why are we being told that the economy is is great shape when it took approximately $2.5 Trillion of new debt to keep the economy rolling?
What would happen if the debt bing was forced to stop - as it will be sooner or later?
About 25% would disapear out of the GDP. Could this produce less than a 50% drop in corporate profits? And would P/E ratios only go down to an normal 14:1?
That conservative estimate means at least a 75% drop in the Dow and a great deal more in most other stocks.
You carry a grave responsibility for your failure to act over the past few years. The unholy trio of Clinton, Greenspan, and Rubin will be remembered in infamy for many many many years when the mess you encouraged unravels

Why have you not raised major red flags and warnings when the annual increase of total debt is significantly greater than the annual increase in GDP?
In 1999 it took about $5 of increased total debt to increase GDP by $1. Doesn't that scare you?
And why didn't you do something (like not subsidize low interest rates) when the ratio was approaching $2 of increased total debt for each $1 increase in GDP?
Will you go down in history as the John Law of the 20th-21st centuries?
It is difficult for me to see how you have been doing your job, part of which is tell unpleasant truths.

Why are we being told that inflation is low when what is really being talked about is the rate of increase of the CPI?
By definition inflation is the rate of increase of the money supply, though this does have a delayed effect on the CPI.
M3 has been going up at about 8% for some time. Inflation cannot be less than that.
How can interest rates less than the rate of increase of the money supply be justified?

I would be shocked if Alan Greenspan, himself, actually reads this. However, I have the curiousity question of, "why is it that when things, (economy) are going well for the general public, you have to stick your neck into it and raise interest rates". I am a man of "rational reasoning" and good old fashion "common sense" and it seems to me that things get all off coarse every time you raise interest rates. Why is that you want to limit the wealth and prosperity to the "Common Folk" while the rich get richer. People, for the first time in a along time, were just starting to appreciate a breath of fresh-air financially, just before you started to raise interest rates.....What am I missing here?? I am a Republican, and proud of it, and also a Christian. I would like to remind you that the Word of God says that "the wealth of the Sinner is stored up for the Righteous". Let the rates stay as they are or even lower them again and I will guarantee you that, even you Alan, will be surprised at how well our economy will become. If your really interested in a strong enconomy, (and not just a controlling wealth of the wealthy), than try what I just recommended and you will see the most powerful economy this country, or any country, has ever seen. I see where you just raised interest rates once again.
I don't have a problem with this, in fact I think they belong in the 6.5-7% range.
However, if you want to cool some of the froth in the Stock Market, I think you're barking up the wrong tree.
My thoughts would be to raise margin requirements to 75%; however I think it would be cataclysmic to do this in one step.
A saner approach would be to effect it via monthly/bi-monthly 5% increases - perhaps after initially announcing the desired target.

Mr. Greenspan, The traditional approach you are using to raise interest rates would work in the old economy, but not in the new economy. It is having the opposite effect you want. Why? The older companies like Procter & Gamble with higher unit labor costs who cannot raise prices in a low-inflation economy are the ones hurt by higher interest rates. Their stocks go lower because of poorer earnings and investors move their money and to high tech stocks whose activity is not affected by interest rates. This drives the NASDAQ stocks higher and the DOW-30 lower. Wouldn't a better solution be to equalize the playing field by LOWERING interest rates to help the Old Economy stocks have a better chance at profits? This would protect the SPX and OEX funds. Perhaps some moves to cool the Tech Stocks, especially the Internets might help achieve the desired economic goals. One possibility might be to limit the immigration of foreign students who are meeting the high tech job market needs. Another might be to increase taxation to the companies with meteoric stock price increases and to those who profitably invest in them.

Please do not raise interest rates. The oil price hikes will slow the economy but also cause a temperary false reading on inflation. If you keep raising rates we will end up with stagflation like the late 70's and defecit spending like the 80's. Dear Mr. Greenspan:
Recognizing that control of the economy is becoming more and more difficult, it I often think that some of the more traditional methods of doing so don't make as much sense as they used to. You have stated that bringing the stock market under control is one of the objectives that you would like to achieve. Here is one of the differences that I see in the current economy (as opposed to the old economy) where it doesn't make sense to me and I would like your comment (recognizing that it is very unlikely that you will even get this).
What is driving the stock market today, and it has never happened in prior history, is baby boomers. They are at there peak earning years, their children have moved, or are moving soon, social security is perceived to be in serious trouble and offering no reliable benefit and there are very few places in America to invest funds to meet future retirement needs.
Raising interest rates, while there is no real hint of inflation, will not stop the inflow of capital into the equity martkets via 401(k) plans, supplimentary savings programs, etc. While money managers may be spending there gains, I don't really believe the baby boomer that I am describing are spending much, if any, of their recent gains. That defeats the purpose of why they are saving. If the market drops it will, in large measure be foreign money or institutional investors moving it into foreign markets. That effect also does not make sense as a desriable outcome. In a nutshell, what is moving the markets higher is not spending, but savings. The only thing that I can see stopping the market is if people get fed up with the market and they stop savings and start spending. Alternatively, when interest rates settle any money that has been taken out of the market, and has not been spent, will simply return it to the market.
I would ask you to think where all this retirement savings is going to go? Quite frankly, if people are content to put it in low interest savings products, it means something terrible would have happened to the U.S. equity markets.
Another reason inflation is not going up (except oil prices which raising interest rates won't do a thing for) is we truly live in a global economy. A sufficient number of employers are not looking to hire in the U.S., they are hiring overseas where unemployment is high.
Your interest rate increases seem off the mark to me and don't look at some of the realities of the global world in which we live. America has a strong influence in the world and what is often missed, especially by most Americans I know, is that the world also has a strong influence on America. In this case, regarding inflation, a positive one.
